Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Table of Contents Metric Charts Canola Seeding 39
Canola Seeding
General Information
Refer to Figure 15
These instructions explain how to plant with the Air-Pro
®
250 cell canola seed disk . This disk is suitable for
canola and mustard (not pelletized).
Although this disk reliably singulates these very small
seeds, this class of seeds is too small to be reliably
detected and counted with currently available seed tube
sensors. This situation presently requires a special seed
monitor setup: singulated with blockage detection.
Details for each monitor are found on pages:

Pre-Requisites
Yield-Pro
®
planters manufactured in November 2013 and
later have Air-Pro
®
seed meters and seed tubes that are
compatible with the 817-991C canola disk. Planters
manufactured earlier may be updated with a 403-684A
update kit. See page 47 for installation.
To determine if your planter is canola-compatible, inspect
any row unit seed tube. If the seed tube color is dark
translucent red, it is compatible. If the tube color is
opaque buckskin (tan), the row units require an update.
Ground Drive charts are provided for row spacings of:
inch: 22, 30 and 30
cm: 70, 75 and 75 twin
If you are planning to run at any other row spacing (such
as 70 cm single row), you will need to calculate your own
drive sprocket pairings.
The canola disk is compatible with Air-Pro
®
rice meters.
If the planter has been used for volumetric seeding, the
grain shield may be left in place. A grain shield is not
required for planting with the canola disk.
Prepare Meters
See the planter Operator manual for step details.
1. Remove rain covers on all rows.
2. Perform a clean-out of the planter seed system, from
hoppers to meter brushes.
3. Remove and save the presently installed seed disks.
4. Install the 817-991C canola disks.
5. Install the rain covers.
6. Set the seed inlet shutters to the recommended
values in the canola rpm limits chart (page 44) or
seed rate charts (pages 41 and 42). This is typically
setting 1.5 (1

, the notch between “I” and “II”). On
early meters (that lack half steps on the shutter) set
the handle between “I” and “II”.
7. Set meter pressurization to 1.5 inches of water.
See Operator manual for adjustment details.
Loading Seed
Use ample Ezee Glide Plus seed lubricant with small
seeds such as canola and mustard. One cup (240 ml)
per 30 pound (13.6 kg) bag is a minimum starting value.
Mix the seed lubricant early during the seed loading and
mix well. Use more lubricant in extremely dry conditions.
